NASHVILLE – Belmont recorded a trio of late goals to break open a 1-1 contest with Jacksonville State to preserve a 4-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Rose Park.
The Gamecocks will drop to 4-7-2 overall and 1-4 in Ohio Valley Conference action after posting a 3-2 win over Austin Peay on Friday at the JSU Soccer Field. The Bruins improved to 7-4-1 on the season and picked up their third conference win to move to 3-2-0 in the OVC.
After the two clubs were deadlocked at 1-1 through the first 78 minutes, the Bruins collected the game-winning goal in the 79th minute with Belicia Mendiola's first of two goals in the final 10 minutes of the contest. Mendiola added BU's final goal with under a minute after getting past JSU's
Caroline Robinson for an open net score. Her game winner came off of a rebound of her own shot. She finished with a game0high seven total shots, including four on goal. Her day also included assists on Belmont's first goal of the day with a corner kick. She was credited with an assist on the third goal of the day moments later after giving her club the lead. Nikki Clements tacked on an insurance goal in the 81st minute.
The Bruins controlled the match from the onset with a 27-6 shot advantage, including 18 in the final 45 minutes. The Bruins limited the Gamecocks to one opportunity in the second half. Senior
Kayla Thompson, who had a pair of goals on Friday night, finished with two shots to lead the squad.
The Gamecocks equalized moments before halftime with a penalty kick by
Claire Petersen. The Bruins were called for a hand ball inside the box to give JSU the opportunity. The goal was Petersen's second of the season.
JSU will return to OVC action next weekend making the long trek to Charleston, Illinois and Edwardsville, Illinois to face Eastern Illinois on Friday afternoon and closing out the weekend versus SIU Edwardsville on Sunday.
