CHAMPAIGN, Ill – The Jacksonville State soccer team picked up a much-needed win with a 1-0 decision over Eastern Illinois on Friday afternoon.
The match was moved from EIU's Lakeside Field on campus to Champaign, Illinois at the Judah Christian Soccer Complex due to recent heavy rains in the area over the last three days.  The Gamecocks moved to 5-7-2 overall and notched their second Ohio Valley Conference win. The result helped Jax State remain in contention for one of the eight spots for the conference tournament with four matches left on the schedule.  EIU dropped to 5-9-1 overall and 0-6 in the OVC.  JSU closes out the weekend in Edwardsville, Illinois on Sunday with a 1 p.m. duel with the Cougars of SIU Edwardsville.
Fir the third time this season, sophomore
Danielle Monroe recorded the game-winning goal and the second time in a week as she did the same thing last Friday in the final minutes against Austin Peay.  Against EIU, her game winner broke up a scoreless deadlock with her seventh goal of the season, which is the most by a Gamecock since the 2015 season in which Kelsey Bright and Courtney Hurt collected five goals in one season.
Monroe took a shot on the left side of the pitch near the top of the box that went straight the goalkeeper, but it was misplayed by keeper and slipped into the back of the net.  The Villa Rica, Georgia native turned four shots, including three on goal.  Monroe was one of three Gamecocks with four shots each.
Danelle Lindo and
Cheyenne Carden each had four shots.  The trio combined for 12 of JSU's 18 total shots.  JSU put together a balanced attack with nine shots in each half.
Kayla Thompson and
Madison Carruthers had multiple shot attempts.
EIU finished with 10 shots, but senior
Caroline Robinson needed just two saves.
Sunday's contest with SIUE will be available on the OVC Digital Network.
