STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team wraps up a five-game road swing Sunday at Mississippi State at 2 p.m. on the SEC Network and the WatchESPN app.
Sunday's matchup marks just the fifth meeting between the Gamecocks and Bulldogs. Mississippi State holds the series advantage 4-0, dating back to the 1998-99 season. Then-JSU head coach Mike LaPlante was the last to lead Jacksonville State against the Bulldogs, falling 104-80 on Dec. 15, 2005 in a neutral-site game in Jackson, Miss.
The Gamecocks (4-1) are 3-1 since Nov. 13 following the season's opening victory over Tennessee Wesleyan. Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, JSU topped both Savannah State and Chattanooga to claim the title in the Cayman Islands Classic – Chattanooga Bracket at UTC's McKenzie Arena.
Jacksonville State earned its third win of 15 points or more with an 86-71 victory over Savannah State on Nov. 20, then followed it up with a 77-75 overtime win over Chattanooga on Nov. 21 for the program's first win over UTC since the 1975.
Malcolm Drumwright, who scored his 1000th career point in the win over SSU, has been the workhorse for the Gamecocks. The senior is averaging 16.0 points per game, totaling 80 points through five games. He put up 13 against the Tigers and a season-high 27 against the Mocs.
Mississippi State comes into the game with a 4-0 record, earning all four wins inside Humphrey Coliseum. Most recently, the Bulldogs topped Stephen F. Austin 80-75 on Nov. 22 in Starkville. Sophomore Tyson Carter is pacing MSU with 52 total points, averaging 13.0 points per game. Aric Holman, a 6-foot-10 junior, leads the defense with 7.3 rebounds per game and five blocks.
