Gamecocks, UTC Meet for Thursday Matinee at The Pete

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team welcomes Chattanooga to Pete Mathews Coliseum on Thursday, Dec. 21 at Noon for its second meeting of the season with the Mocs.

The Gamecocks (9-3) and UTC (5-6) met Nov. 21 in Chattanooga as part of the Cayman Islands Classic. JSU picked up a 77-75 win in overtime at McKenzie Arena, claiming its first victory over the Mocs since the 1974-75 season.

Jacksonville State looks to stay undefeated at home, sporting a 6-0 record at The Pete this season. A win over Chattanooga would match the 2014-15 team's record for the program's longest Division I undefeated streak at home at 7-0.

Ray Harper can also become Jacksonville State's fastest Division I head coach to reach 30 wins with a victory Thursday. In his second season at JSU, Harper is 29-18 in 47 games. Mike LaPlante, who steered the Gamecocks from 2000 to 2007, currently holds the record with 30 wins in 68 games.

Senior Malcolm Drumwright, the catalyst of the JSU offense, is averaging 16.8 points per game for the month of December. The point guard has totaled 84 points in five games, along with two 20-point performances against Samford (21, Dec. 3) and Oregon State (20, Dec. 12).

Forward Christian Cunningham continues to lead the Gamecocks' defensive effort, ranking 30th in the nation with 2.36 shots blocked per game and 35th in the NCAA with 26 total blocks. His 86 total rebounds and 7.8 boards per game rank just outside the nation's top 100, while his four double-doubles have him as the 52nd-best in the category.

Since the Gamecocks' and Mocs' November matchup, UTC is 3-3 with win s over Tennessee Wesleyan, UT Martin and Charlotte. Chattanooga suffered road losses to Akron, Marshall and Tennessee Tech as it fell to 0-5 away from McKenzie Arena. Makinde London is averaging a team-best 14.4 points per game while also leading the Mocs with 7.3 rebounds per game.
