OXFORD – For the fourth consecutive weekend Jacksonville State will play a rubber game on Sunday after Tennessee Tech evened the Ohio Valley Conference weekend series with a 22-6 win at Choccolocco Park.
After the Gamecocks (16-12, 5-6 OVC) handed the Golden Eagles (25-8, 13-1 OVC) their first loss in the conference on Friday with a 7-2 decision, Tech bounced back to force the third-and-decisive game three on Sunday. The rubber game of the series is slated for 1 p.m. at Choccolocco Park. Admission is free to all JSU students and all fans 18 years old and younger.
Tech's offense regrouped after Jax State held it to a pair of runs on nine hits on Friday night. TTU collected the 22 runs on 24 hits and scored runs in eight of the nine frames. TTU broke open the contest with a five-run third that was highlighted by a pair of run-scoring doubles. TTU's Nick Osborne cleared the bases with a double to right center, while Trevor Putzig added a pair of RBI on a double down the left field line. Osborne and Putzig were two of seven Golden Eagles to have multiple hits in the contest. Chase Chambers paced the potent lineup with a 5-for-6 day at the plate, including a pair of doubles. Ryan Flick connected on two of Tech's five home runs in the contest.
JSU's offense, which tallied 13 hits on Saturday, started producing runs over the last six frames. Junior
Trent Simpson recorded an RBI in the fourth inning for the first Gamecock run, while
Dalton Etheridge delivered an RBI single in the fifth for the second run. The Gamecocks strung together three hits and scored three runs in the sixth. Freshman
Andrew Naismith, who had a pair of hits, pushed the first run of the frame across the dish with a hit and a throwing error from the outfield, followed by an RBI single by junior
Hayden White.
White led JSU with three hits in the setback and his fourth multiple hit game of the season the first three-hit outing of the year for the catcher from Prattville, Alabama.
Senior
Peyton Williams had an RBI single in the eighth for JSU's sixth run of the day.
Clayton Daniel and
A.J. Reynolds joined Naismith and White with multiple hits in the loss.
Junior
Colton Pate was saddled with the loss (1-4) after going two innings, while TTU's Jake Usher posted the win and moved to 2-1 on the season.
Sunday's contest will be available on the Gamecock Sports Network with air time at 12:40 p.m.
