TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Jacksonville State is set to make its seventh NCAA Regional appearance in the last 10 years on Friday, when the Gamecocks take on Georgia in the Tallahassee Regional.
The third-seeded Gamecocks (40-10) and the second-seeded Bulldogs (33-21) will square off at 3:30 p.m. CT at Florida State's JoAnne Graf Field in a game that will be televised on ESPN2. JSU practiced in the facility on Thursday, finalizing preparations for Friday's showdown.
The back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference champions will face the team that finished last in the Southeastern Conference standings in the opening game of the Tallahassee Regional. All 13 SEC softball programs earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament field for the first time ever.
It marks JSU's second consecutive NCAA Regional appearance after the Gamecocks advanced to the championship game of the Auburn Regional, where JSU fell to eventual national runner-up Auburn. It will be JSU's first postseason appearance in Tallahassee and its first game in the Florida state capital since 2002, when the Gamecocks dropped both games of a doubleheader with a Seminole squad that advanced to the Women's College World Series.
JSU is 1-2 all-time against Georgia, splitting a pair of meetings in Athens in 2005 and dropping a matchup in Walt Disney World in 2016. Friday will mark the first meeting between the two schools in the postseason.
Jax State holds an all-time record of 11-15 in the NCAA Tournament and has advanced to the championship game in a regional three times. The Gamecocks lost to Alabama in the 2008 Tuscaloosa Regional, one they eliminated FSU from by winning 4-3 in the opening game and 10-1 in an elimination contest. The Gamecocks defeated Tennessee to win the 2009 Knoxville Regional and then advanced to the Auburn Regional final in 2016 by eliminating Oregon State and USC Upstate.
JSU enters postseason play receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25. The Gamecocks received five votes in the latest poll, two more than Georgia, putting JSU on the verge of being ranked for the first time since 2010.
JSU is riding high entering its eight NCAA Regional appearance. After sweeping through the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament last week, Jax State has won six in a row and 21 of its last 22 games. The only blemish in that stretch is a 2-1 loss at Southeastern Conference Tournament Champion Ole Miss, however there is an extra-inning win over the Rebels in that same time frame.
JSU capped another dominant season against OVC foes, posting a 15-1 record in the regular season and a 4-0 mark in the conference tournament. The Gamecocks are 49-2 against conference opponents over the last two seasons, including a 41-1 record in regular season play and an 8-1 mark in the conference tournament.
The winner of Friday's JSU-UGA game will face the FSU-Princeton winner on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. The losing team in each game will play an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. JSU and Princeton have never met on the softball diamond.
The game will not only be televised on ESPN2, but Mike Parris will be calling the action on the JSU Radio Network. Fans in the Jacksonville area can listen to 91.9FM WLJS, and the broadcast will also be available at www.jsugamecocksports.com or on the TuneIn App by searching for WLJS.
