JACKSONVILLE – On a night honoring the two seniors on the club, it was a sophomore that scored the winning goal with just over a minute left to lift Jacksonville State past Austin Peay, 3-2, on Friday night at the JSU Soccer Field.
Danielle Monroe's strike from about 25 yards out stuck the right post and ricocheted in to the net for the game-winning goal.  With the win, the Gamecocks notched their first Ohio Valley Conference win and snapped a four-match losing streak in the process.  JSU, who will finish the weekend in Nashville, Tennessee on Sunday against Belmont, moved to 4-6-2 overall.  The Govs dropped to 7-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the league.
Monroe's game winner moments before the final bell saved the match from extra time after APSU rallied with a pair of goals in the final 45 minutes of the contest.  The Govs erased a 2-0 deficit after senior
Kayla Thompson tallied back-to-back goals within a four-minute span to give Jax State a two-goal cushion.  Thompson, who was honored prior to the match, dribbled from the midfield and through the APSU defense before going 1-v-1 with the goalkeeper.  Thompson pushed the ball past APSU's Mary Parker Powell to the right side of the net for the first goal before the 10-minute mark of the opening half.  The Brandon, Mississippi native was able to get behind the APSU line of defense after Monroe flicked the ball to Thompson, who beat the keeper with a strike to the left corner.  It was the second time in her career to have two goals in a single contest as she did in 2014 as a freshman.  Monroe finished the night with three points with the goal and the assist.
JSU knew the Govs would make a run in the second half and the visitors broke up the shutout with a goal in the 58th minute.  Morgan Dawdy produced the first of two goals in the half with a header off of a free kick.  After JSU was called for a penalty in the box, Dawdy earned the game0tying goal with a penalty kick in the 84th minute.
JSU's
Caroline Robinson was also honored before the game as a one of the two departing seniors on the club.  The Hendersonville, Tennessee stopped had a pair of key stops in the opening half and finished with five on the night.  Robinson is approaching second place on the program's all-time career saves list with 288 career saves.
The Gamecocks might have found a charm with gold laces worn on Friday night to honor pediatric cancer awareness.  JSU raised $2,130 in proceeds for pediatric cancer with an online auction and t-shirt sales.
JSU will look to keep the momentum on Sunday against the Bruins.  Match time from Music City is set for 2 p.m. at Rose Park near the BU campus.  The match will be available on the OVC Digital Network.  The Bruins dropped a 2-1 decision to Tennessee Tech on Friday.
