JSU's women's basketball team looks to stay hot while on the road in the chilly southeast. The Gamecocks (11-6, 5-1 OVC) are off to their best start in conference play since their debut season in the OVC in 2003-04. They'll go for the season sweep against the Eagles of Morehead State (13-6. 4-2) in a 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT tip at Johnson Arena on Thursday.
A sweep of MSU would be the first since 2015 for JSU, and could even the series at 5-5 under head coach Rick Pietri. MSU leads the all-time series, 19-12, and owns a 9-5 advantage in Morehead, Ky. The series has become one of the tightest JSU sees annually with the past eight meetings all decided by eight points or less, including JSU's 70-64 home victory on Dec. 30.
With a third of the conference season down, JSU sits tied with SIUE for second with a 5-1 mark, just behind preseason favorite, Belmont, who sits at 6-0. MSU holds sole possession of fourth with its 4-2 record, ahead of three teams with .500 marks at 3-3.
Jax State's early-season success has been a combination of its trademark defense, along with a new balanced offensive attack. Seniors Gretchen Morrison, Tyler Phelion, junior Rayven Peason and freshman Taylor Hawks lead JSU's scoring averaging between 9.6 and 7.3 points, apiece. On the opposite end of the floor, the Gamecocks continue to lead the league in scoring defense allowing just 56.6 points per game. JSU has been especially tough on opponents' outside shooting allowing a NCAA-low 50 three-points this season.
