JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team topped West Alabama 5-2 Thursday afternoon at the JSU Tennis Courts to open the 2018 regular season.
"What a great way to begin the season," head coach
Andres Amores said. "Both of our teams played really well today, and I am proud of our effort. The season is early and we still have some work to do, but today's matches were promising starts."
The Gamecocks took seven of the eight matchups, dropping just two singles points on the day. JSU swept the doubles portion of the match to claim the doubles point, outright.
The teams of
Genevie Ulanday and
Elena Tendero,
Alba Conejero and
Alessia Locati, and
Diana Monsalve and
Marine Alberteau swept the Tiger in doubles competition. Conejero and Locati won 7-5, and the remaining two teams each finished with 6-4 scores, each.
Tendero and Monsalve each tallied 6-4, 6-4 wins against their opponents, while Alberteau downed UWA's Katie Burrall in the sixth position. Conejero earned an impressive win over Liliana Araucz, sweeping both sets 6-0.
The Gamecocks hit the road for a double-header Jan. 28, taking on both Alcorn State and Jackson State at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. JSU returns home Feb. 20 for a noon match against Kennesaw State.
