JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team returns home this weekend to host Eastern Illinois and SIU-Edwardsville inside Kennamer Hall for a pair of pivotal conference matches.
Nearing the halfway point of the Ohio Valley Conference season, JSU (10-9, 3-3 OVC) has found its rhythm of late riding a three-match win-streak into Friday night's contest against the Panthers. The Gamecocks look to extend their winning ways against EIU, who enters with a 6-15 record and 1-5 mark in league play. The Friday matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Kennamer Hall. Admission is free to all.
On Saturday, JSU welcomes the other league member from the Prairie State with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. SIUE (4-14, 3-3 OVC) sits tied with Jax State for fifth in the OVC standings, having won three of its four matches this season since starting conference play. This will be the only matchup between JSU and both EIU and SIUE this season, handing potential tiebreaker rights to the weekend winners.
While JSU leads the all-time series with EIU, 15-8, the Panthers have won three-straight in the series and five of the last six. JSU has a much shorter history with the Cougars who joined the OVC in 2011, only meeting eight times in the past. However, in those eight matchups, SIUE has been victories all but once when JSU claimed the 2014 contest.
Jax State will once against roll out an aggressive attack this weekend with an offense that ranks in the top three of the league in hitting percentage, kills and assists. Sophomore Lexie Libs, the reigning OVC setter of the week, enters 11th in the country with 797 assists this season. She's benefitted from a plethora of successful Gamecock attackers which features five players with 100 or more kills this season led by freshman Lena Kindermann's 228.
The balance carries over to the defense where six Gamecocks have upped 100 or more attacks, led by sophomore Kaylie Milton's 224 digs. Milton, who also has 121 kills, has split time at libero along with fellow sophomores Jade Humphrey and Dani Steele. The back row, which also features Addie Halverson and Ashley Clingan in regular rotations, has benefitted from a strong unit at the net with 64 blocks by senior Mackenzie Rombach and 62 from junior Kaylee Frear.
Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. and live stats will be available JSUGamecockSports.com.
