Gamecocks Finish Strong in Tuesday Win over Tech

JACKSONVILLE – Freshman Lena Kindermann tied a career-high 18 kills to lead Jacksonville State to its second consecutive home win, defeating Tennessee Tech 3-1 in a midweek matchup inside Kennamer Hall.

The Gamecocks (9-9, 2-3 Ohio Valley Conference) hit .243 combined, while holding visiting TTU (7-12, 1-4 OVC to just a .108 clip.

Behind Kindermann's towering 18 kills, sophomore Kaylie Milton finished one shy of her career mark with 14 putaways to go along with 14 digs in her fifth double-double of the year. Redshirt-freshman Addie Halverson also pulled double duty with 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Lexie Libs, who entered the contest ranked 13th nationally in assists, added 52 assists to her season total. Junior Kaylee Frear added nine kills, and led the way across the net woth four blocks, one ahead of senior Mackenzie Rombach's three. Behind the blocks, sophomore Dani Steele compiled a team-high 15 digs, ahead of Milton, Halverson, Libs and Ashley Clingan.

After TTU opened a 13-9 advantage in the first set, JSU reeled off four-straight points to even things up and begin a back-and-forth battle down the stretch. The Gamecocks eventually lead 24-23, but the Golden Eagles fought off consecutive set points to extend the frame, before stealing the set away from JSU late, 27-25.

Kills from Halverson and Milton pulled JSU away from a 7-7 tie in the second, and the Gamecocks didn't look back as it built its lead to as many as seven en route to the 25-18 victory to even the match at one set apiece. In the third, a 9-3 run for JSU forced a Tech timeout as Jax State extended another large lead out to 18-12. Out of the break, JSU didn't slow down powering through in a convincing 25-14 decision to grab a 2-1 match advantage.

The Gamecocks continued their efficiency in the fourth and final frame pulling away for a 24-16. A scrappy TTU squad made the final point a difficult one to come by as JSU held on for a 25-21 win.

For JSU, the consecutive home wins proved important as Jax State continues to be without some of its key pieces dealing with injuries. The Gamecocks will take their OVC streak on the road at the end of the week to face UT Martin on Friday night.
