JACKSONVILLE – Following consecutive home wins, the Jacksonville State volleyball team will hit the road for its only match of the weekend at the University of Tennessee at Martin on Friday evening.
JSU (9-9, 2-3 Ohio Valley Conference) will face UT Martin (8-10, 2-3 OVC) in the lone matchup between the two schools this season at 6 p.m. on Friday inside Skyhawk Arena. The former Division II conference foes have a long history, and have met 22 times as Division I members, beginning in 1999. JSU leads the series, 16-6, having won five of the last six and two of the last three in Martin, Tenn.
The Skyhawks are returning home after three-straight road contests which wrapped up with a 3-1 loss at Southeast Missouri on Tuesday. UTM enters the contest with the four0best defense by digs in the conference led by senior Brooke Gyori's 5.14 digs per set. The Gamecocks will test that back row with the third best offense in the league in hitting percentage, kills and assists.
Sophomore Lexie Libs 243 assists in OVC play are the most among any setter in conference play. Her targets include two of the top seven hitters by percentage in the conference with Lena Kindermann (.361) and Mackenzie Rombach (.310). Beyond that, junior Kaylee Frear, sophomore Kaylie Milton and redshirt-freshman Addie Halverson each boast more than 100 kills as Jax State features the only roster in the OVC with five players in triple digits.
Defensively, Rombach and Frear had patrolled the net with 60 and 57 blocks, respectively. The Gamecocks are allowing opponents to hit just .187 through the first five conference matches. Milton lead the back row with 214 digs, followed by Libs (171) and Jade Humphrey (159). Senior Ashley Clingan is the fourth Gamecock above 100, just ahead of sophomore Dani Steele who's up to 94 digs after donning the libero jersey in recent contest.
