PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – From snow in Peoria, Ill., last week to the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea this week, the Jacksonville State men's basketball team is set to compete in the Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Following U.S. Regional play at campus-sites Penn State and Bradley last week, JSU is set to take on Western Carolina on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m., followed by either North Florida or Southern Miss on Wednesday. Both games will stream on CBS Sports Digital (cable or satellite subscription required).
It's the Gamecocks' first trip abroad since competing in the Tropical Shootout in the British Virgin Islands during the 2013-14 season. The team arrived in Mexico on Sunday and practiced Monday morning at 10 a.m. on the tournament's practice floor.
Jacksonville State (0-3) is looking to pick up its first win of the season following a tough 0-3 start. All three losses have come on the road as the Gamecocks are in the midst of a 10-game stretch that doesn't see a game played at Pete Mathews Coliseum until Dec. 18.
Redshirt senior Detrick Mostella is beginning to heat up for JSU, scoring a team-leading 30 points in his last two games. After a slow start at Samford that saw the Decatur, Ala., native bucket just five points, he led Jacksonville State with a season-high 17 points at Penn State and scored a game-best 13 points at Bradley. He and fellow senior Jason Burnell are tied for the team lead in points scored this season with 35 each.
Western Carolina (1-4) recently picked up its first win of the season, topping NCCAA opponent Hiwassee 94-55 at home. The Catamounts are 0-3 against Division I programs this season, falling on the road to Wright State and SMU in Cancun Challenge U.S. Regional play, while dropping a tight 77-74 home opener against the College of Charleston.
In four games played, sophomore guard Matt Halvorsen has led the Catamounts in scoring, assists, free-throw percentage and minutes played. He posted a season-best 26 points against Hiwassee on Saturday and has missed just one free throw in 12 attempts.
