JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's volleyball team hosts Southeast Missouri State on Saturday for Senior Day to conclude the regular season.
The Gamecocks (16-13, 8-7 Ohio Valley Conference) will face a Redhawk team that enters with almost an identical record at 16-12 overall and 8-7 in OVC play. The two teams tied for sixth in the league standings will face off for the first time this season at 2 p.m. Saturday inside Kennamer Hall. Admission is free.
Prior to Saturday's match, JSU will recognize its three senior student-athletes in a special pregame ceremony. The seniors include four-year members Mackenzie Rombach and Ashley Clingan, and beach transfer Katie Will, who's pulled double duty and joined the indoor team in both 2016 and 2018.
This senior class was the first in JSU's 41-year program history to not see a match inside the friendly confines of Pete Mathews Coliseum after the Gamecocks' primary home was severely damaged following the March tornado. Kennamer Hall has served as temporary solution for the 2018 season, and Jax State has done its best to make it home, reeling off a 9-3 home record, just one win shy of its third-straight season of double-digit home wins.
Overall the senior class has tallied 71 total wins, and next week will make its third consecutive appearance in the conference tournament. While JSU currently sits sixth, a win over SEMO would allow JSU to move as high as third in the final standings based off a series of tiebreakers if other league results fall a certain way.
JSU's offense that ranks third in the OVC in hitting percentage at .213 will be led by sophomore setter Lexie Libs. The first-year Gamecock has amassed nearly 1,200 season assists and currently ranks in the top 10 in the nation. She often finds freshman Lena Kindermann, junior Kaylee Frear and sophomore Kaylie Milton who will have to work around a SEMO defense that's fifth in the conference in digs and eighth in blocks.
JSU's own back row consists of sophomore Dani Steele, joined by Clingan and a series of other rotations with Sadie Anderson, Libs and Milton who have been able to slow down most every opponent they've faced this season.
A win on Saturday would give JSU back-to-back winning records in conference play, a feat that has been accomplished since the 2009-2010 seasons.
