MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Only one game stands between the Jacksonville State men's basketball team and Christmas. The Gamecocks (7-4) square off against West Virginia (6-4) at WVU Coliseum on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 11 a.m. CT on AT&T SportsNet.
West Virginia is the fourth opponent this season that the Gamecocks are meeting for the first time in program history (Penn State, North Florida and Wichita State), and only the second Big 12 opponent faced in the past three seasons (at TCU, Nov. 18, 2016).
Jacksonville State has won seven of its past eight games, including five road games. The Gamecocks' most recent win came against North Alabama in a 64-50 contest to sweep the season's series with the Lions. Senior Jason Burnell scored a team-best 19 points in the win, totaling nine boards and nine free throws made.
Burnell has been the catalyst of the Gamecocks' winning ways this season, averaging 15.4 points per game with 26 assists and 68 rebounds over the eight-game span of seven victories. He leads JSU with 158 total points, 92 rebounds and 35 assists this season.
On the defensive side, Jacksonville State ranks 29th in the nation for turnovers forced. The Gamecocks have totaled 187 TOs forced in 11 games at an average of 17.0 per game. As a result, JSU has outscored opponents 203-151 on turnovers.
Senior Jamall Gregory has stolen the how on defense, ranking 38th in the NCAA with his 24 steals. The number is tied for second-most in the Ohio Valley Conference, averaging out to 2.2 steals per game – good for 38th in the nation and third in the OVC. As a result, JSU ranks 23rd in the NCAA in total steals (99) and 18th in steals per game (9.0 per game).
West Virginia looks to keep rolling at home, owning a 4-1 record this season at WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers have won 66 of their last 70 home game in the month of December, presenting a major challenge for the Gamecocks. WVU's lone home loss this season was to Buffalo, 99-94, in the season opener on Nov. 9.
Forward Esa Ahmad leads West Virginia with 148 total points, for 14.8 points per game, and 11 steals. He has 60 boards – 29 on the offensive side – behind team rebounding leader Sagaba Konate, who has 68.
Following the Christmas break, the Gamecocks return home Dec. 29 to take on Reinhardt at 4 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. It is the final non-conference game before JSU travels to Nashville to open OVC play against Belmont and Tennessee State.
