Gamecocks Rally, Hand Host Dolphins 8-7 Loss in Extras

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville State softball team rallied for its second extra-inning win in as many days on Sunday, capping the River City Leadoff with an 8-7 win over host Jacksonville.

The Gamecocks (3-2) used a five-run sixth inning to erase a three-run deficit and then answered a late surge by the Dolphins (3-2) to win in extra innings. The dramatic win came just 24 hours after pulling off a walk-off win over Army on Saturday in eight innings.

Sunday's thriller was perhaps the best performance from JSU's best performer over the weekend. Junior Taylor Beshears, a transfer from Wallace State Community College, went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI in the game.

Both doubles from the Trussville, Ala., native came in the last three innings. Her first put the Gamecocks ahead in the sixth, driving in two and turning a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 lead. The second was the game winner, a shot into center field that drove in Emily Woodruff as the game's final run.

Beshears capped a debut weekend in a Gamecock uniform that saw her hit .526 (10-for-19) with five doubles and five RBI. She also scored five runs, helping her account for 10 of JSU's 28 total runs in the tournament.

Junior Hayley Sims also had a solid weekend, going 6-for-12 with three RBI, while junior Lex Hull's six RBI led the Gamecocks.

Sunday's game got off to a good start, with JSU plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Hannahstaysia Weaver scored the first run on an Alexus Jimmerson grounder and Jimmerson scored the second on a squeeze bunt from Hull.

The Dolphins answered quickly, plating three runs on freshman Nicole Rodriguez in the first and then scoring two more in the second off of junior Kirsten Titus. The 5-2 score held until JSU's sixth-inning rally.

Sims' RBI single started the frame and Amber Jones infield single plated another run to set up Beshears' first double of the day. She drove a 3-2 pitch into center, scoring Weaver and Woodruff to give JSU the lead. Beshears would score the next run on a Hull single, giving the Gamecocks a 7-5 lead.

Jacksonville answered with two in the home half of the sixth to tie the game, and a pair of scoreless efforts in the seventh sent the game into extras.

Woodruff started the eighth on second thanks to the international tiebreaker rule and stood on third with two outs when Beshears ripped her game winner.

Faith Sims (2-0) worked around the tiebreaker rule in the home half of the eighth, eventually ending the game on a bases loaded strike out of Hannah Roberts that sealed the win.

Sims earned the win in relief after tossing two shutout innings that also saw her strike out two and walk one. She capped a weekend in which she posted a 2-0 record, a 2.29 earned run average and 23 strike outs in 18 and 1/3 innings.

Seana Mora (1-2) suffered the loss for Jacksonville after allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits over the game's final three innings.

Woodruff, freshman Jada Terry and junior Anna Snider joined Beshears as the Gamecocks with two hits in the game.

JSU will open its home schedule on Wednesday, when it hosts Samford at 5 p.m. at University Field. Tickets can be purchased online at www.JSUGamecockSports/com/Tickets. All fans ages 18 and under and all JSU students get in free.
