Box Score 2 HATTIESBURG, Miss. –
Anna Chisolm had a big day at the plate to lead the Jacksonville State softball team to a doubleheader split at Southern Miss on Saturday.
Chisolm, a junior from St. Louis, went a combined 4-for-7 with five RBI, a double and a homer in guiding the Gamecocks (6-8) on offense. JSU picked up a 6-3 win in the first game of the day before dropping a 9-6 decision in the series finale to the Golden Eagles (6-8).
That first game also saw sophomore
Alexus Jimmerson toss four solid innings in the circle to earn the win, while going 2-for-4 with a double at the plate. The Jackson, Tenn., native allowed just two unearned runs on three hits in her outing that improved her to 2-2 on the young season.
She got run support early and in a big way. The Gamecocks plated five runs in the top of the second, the first on a
Jada Terry RBI single and the next on a sac bunt from
Emily Woodruff. Chisolm capped the big inning with a three-run homer that put the 5-0 advantage on the board.
USM got one back in the third and another in the fifth to cut its deficit to 5-2, but a Chisolm RBI single in the sixth scored
Caitlyn Sapp to stretch the lead back to four runs. Sapp also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-6 over the two games.
Southern Miss got one more in the sixth, but they couldn't scratch another across off of
Faith Sims, who tossed the final three innings to earn her first save of the season. The junior allowed just one run on three hits in her three-inning relief outing.
Kim Crowson (3-2) suffered the loss as the starter in the circle for the Golden Eagles after allowing five runs on four hits after recording just four outs before being chased. Jillian Johnson threw the final 5 and 2/3 innings, for USM, holding the Gamecocks to an unearned run on two hits.
In the second game of the day, Southern Miss jumped out on the Gamecocks, scoring a run in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to open up a 6-0 lead before JSU could get on the board.
The Gamecocks finally got on the board in the fifth with a four-run inning that cut the Golden Eagles' lead to just two runs. Woodruff singled in a run to start the inning before a Chisolm single to left led to two more runs. The final one crossed when
Taylor Beshears reached on an error that also allowed Woodruff to score.
Southern Miss answered JSU's rally with a three-run bottom of the fifth that stretched the lead to 9-4 before a
Hayley Sims solo homer in the sixth and a Beshears solo blast in the seventh capped the scoring in the 9-6 game.
Kirsten Titus (1-3) suffered the loss for JSU after surrendering five runs on seven hits in 3 and 1/3 innings in the circle. Jimmerson recorded two outs and allowed one run, while
Nicole Rodriguez gave up one in one inning of work.
Faith Sims threw a scoreless frame for JSU.
Samantha Robles (3-3) was the winning pitcher in the game, allowing four unearned runs on five hits in her five innings of work. Johnson surrendered the final two runs in two innings.
