MBB Game Notes: Jacksonville State | Tennessee State
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team takes on Tennessee State on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Thursday's game is America's First Federal Credit Union Kid's Day at The Pete. America's First is offering promotional items for children 18-years-old and under, and the Leed's Jump Rope Team will perform at halftime.
Jacksonville State (18-8, 9-4 OVC) is looking to split the season series with Tennessee State (13-11, 8-5 OVC) following a Jan. 4 loss to the Tigers in Nashville. Both teams enter the Saturday matchup coming off OVC wins Thursday. JSU topped Tennessee Tech to claim sole possession of third place in the league standings, while TSU downed top-ranked Belmont 64-56 at the Gentry Center.
Junior Jason Burnell went on a tear Thursday, scoring a career-high 22 points and snagging a career-best 12 rebounds against the Golden Eagles. It was his second career double-double and second in as many games. He is now tied with senior Malcolm Drumwright for most double-digit scoring games for 2017-18 with 18.
With a start Thursday night, Drumwright will surpass Brian Williams (2010-14) for most all-time Division I starts as a Gamecock with 95. The iron man has started 61 consecutive games for Jacksonville State, dating back to last season's opener at Tulsa.
Tennessee State is tied for fifth place in the OVC standings with Tennessee Tech following Thursday's contests. Christian Mekowulu recorded his eighth career double-double against Belmont, tallying 18 points and 11 rebounds. He leads TSU with 8.1 rebounds per game and scored 14 points against the Gamecocks in their last meeting.
