Box Score Box Score

CHARLESTON, Ill.
– The Jacksonville State men's tennis team opened Ohio Valley Conference play with a win Friday afternoon, topping Eastern Illinois 7-0 at the Danville Tennis Center.

The victory got the Gamecocks (11-2, 1-0 OVC) back on track following a week break. JSU suffered a 4-3 loss against Kennesaw State on March 7 at home and was rained out of its March 10 matchup in Chattanooga.

Jacksonville State took all singles matchups with the Panthers (4-12, 0-1 OVC) in straight sets. Aljaz Kaplja improved to 6-5 for the season at the No. 1 position, taking down EIU's Freddie O'Brien 6-3 and 6-4, and reigning OVC Player of the Week Andres Gomez topped Braden Davis in two sets for his fourth consecutive victory.

The Gamecocks claimed the doubles point 2-1, representing the only set lost on Friday. JSU bumped its doubles record to 24-11 overall with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Guillermo Agost and Gomez remained undefeated and improved to 3-0 at No. 1 with a 7-5 win, while Pablo Caffarena and Sergio Lizarraga swept Kaisei Kuroki and Logan Charbonneau 6-0 in the final set.

The team returns to the JSU Tennis Courts March 24 at 1 p.m. to host Austin Peay. Eastern Kentucky then pays the Gamecocks a visit on March 30 for a noon contest.
