
Women's Tennis Splits Weekend OVC Series

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team split its Ohio Valley Conference weekend in Illinois between Eastern Illinois and SIU-Edwardsville, dropping a 4-3 match to the Panthers on Friday and topping the Cougars 6-1 on Saturday.
The Gamecocks (9-2, 2-1 OVC) suffered their first conference loss Friday, falling by one to EIU at the Danville Tennis Center. JSU began the day in a 1-0 hole with the loss of the doubles point, but battled back with wins at No. 3, 1 and 5 to tie the match at three sets each. The No. 6 contest between Marine Alberteau and EIU's Claire Martin became the decider. After winning the first set 7-6 (4-0), Martin bested Alberteau 6-3 in the second set to claim the win for the Panthers (7-9, 1-0 OVC).
Jacksonville State bounced back Saturday with a 6-1 victory over SIUE (0-12, 0-1 OVC) in Edwardsville. JSU took the second and third sets in doubles play to claim the first point of the afternoon and proceeded to allow just one singles win to the Cougars.
Alberteau got back on track with a Saturday win, improving to 7-1 overall in 2018. Alba Conejero remained undefeated at 5-0 with a three-set victory over Anna Talley at No. 5, and Diana Monsalve pushed her team-best record to 8-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Katherine Lahue.
The team returns to the JSU Tennis Courts March 24 at 1 p.m. to host Austin Peay. Murray State then pays the Gamecocks a visit on March 25 for a 10 a.m. contest.
