FINAL RESULTS
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Another solid round by the Jacksonville State men's golf team on Sunday lifted the Gamecocks to a third-place finish at the FAU Spring Championship.
The Gamecocks turned in a 7-under 281 on Sunday on the par-72, 6,786-yard Osprey Point Golf Club to climb one spot on the final day of the 19-team event. JSU finished the 54-hole tournament with a score of 850, the 14th-best 54-hole score in school history, and finished behind second-place Connecticut and first-place Lynn, the sixth-ranked team in the nation.
JSU was led by freshman Jesus Montenegro, who carded the 13th-best 54-hole score in school history with a 10-under 206 that tied him for third in the 114-player field. The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, carded a 3-under 69 on Sunday, one day after a second-round 66, to cap his impressive weekend.
Montenegro finished five shots behind medalist Jimmy Hervol of UConn and four back of Lynn's Carlos Bustos.
Senior
Daniel Pico tied for sixth in the event, thanks to a final-round 70 that put the finishing touches on his three-day total of 210. The Bucaramanga, Colombia, native finished the event at 6-under par, his best finish of the season.
Sophomore
Max Basler tied for 30th after his final round 71 – the second in as many days for the Konigswinter, Germany, native – capped his 1-over 217 for the tournament.
Junior
Benedikt Thalmayr also shot 71 on Sunday, finishing off a 218 that tied him for 34th. Freshamn
Quim Vidal Mora shot 75 in his final 18 holes, closing a 224 and tying for 73rd.
The Gamecocks return to the links April 9, when they begin play at the Gary Koch Invitational at the Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, N.C. That will be JSU's final tune up before the Ohio Valley Conference Championship on April 23-25 at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
