Box Score 2 CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Jacksonville State softball team split its doubleheader at Southeast Missouri on Sunday, winning the first game 6-0 before dropping a 7-2 decision in the nightcap.
Junior
Faith Sims tossed a three-hit shutout of the Redhawks (19-11, 3-1 Ohio Valley Conference) in the opener to extend the Gamecocks (14-16, 3-1 OVC) conference win streak to 17 games. That streak was snapped in the finale of the day, when a five-run fourth inning did JSU in.
Junior
Taylor Beshears went 4-for-7 with a homer on the day, while freshman
Jada Terry was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and an RBI in the opener before leaving the game with an injury. Over the week, she hit .429 with a double, triple, homer and four RBI in just seven at bats.
The Gamecocks jumped on the Redhawks early in the opening game, scoring one run in the first, one in the second and two more in the third to open a 4-0 lead. Beshears' homre to right in the first started the scoring, while Terry's RBI double in the second stretched the early lead to 2-0.
Alexus Jimmerson ripped a two-run single into right center in the third that plated
Anna Chisolm and
Caitlyn Sapp.
Hayley Sims homered to add a run in the sixth, and Jimmerson singled home
Emily Woodruff to cap the scoring in the seventh.
Faith Sims (9-7) tossed all seven innings, allowing just three singles in the win. She walked four batters and struck out a pair, facing just 28 batters in the complete game.
Haley Thogmartin (5-4) suffered the loss for SEMO, allowing two runs on three hits in her two innings in the circle.
In the finale,
Hayley Sims put JSU in front 2-0 in the third. Her single to left center drove in Jimmerson and Beshears and gave starter
Nicole Rodriguez the early advantage.
The freshman hurler cruised through three innings, but the fourth caused her some trouble. A pair of homers, a three-run shot by Sarah Messex and and two-run shot from Claudia Gallo put the five runs on the board and JSU in a three-run hole.
The Redhawks grabbed two more runs on a Parker Bandy single and put the deciding score on the board.
Rodriguez (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and a pair of walks in 3 and 1/3 innings. JImmerson tossed the final 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. She did strike out five of the eight outs she recorded.
Madeline Krumrey (10-3) earned the win for the Redhawks, holding JSU to two runs on seven hits in seven frames. She struck out seven and walked two.
JSU will return to action on Wednesday, when it takes on UAB in a 5 p.m. game in Birmingham. The Gamecocks will get back to OVC play on Friday with a doubleheader at Murray State at 1 p.m. in Murray, Ky.
