BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – As the Jacksonville State football team gears up to chase a fifth-straight Ohio Valley Conference championship on the field, the Gamecocks won another one in the classroom on Thursday.
The Gamecocks won the 2017-18 OVC Team Academic Achievement Award for Football, the third time in the last four years that JSU has won the award.
The OVC Team Academic Achievement Awards are presented annually in each Conference-sponsored sport to the member institution's team with the greatest percentage of its eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 grade point average or higher. JSU placed 20 football players on the Commissioner's Honor Roll in the last academic year, five more than the next-highest total.
In head coach John Grass' four seasons as the Gamecocks' head coach, he has now won four football titles and three Team Academic Achievement Awards. His team posted an overall 3.1 GPA during the 2017-18 academic year, helping the JSU Athletics Department to a department-wide 3.236 overall GPA, the highest in department history.
Three Gamecocks boasted a 4.0 GPA last season, earning them the OVC Academic Medal of Honor. Those football student-athletes are Dakota Chapman, Dean Kelly and Tyler Scozzaro.
The 20 football players named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2017-18 are: B.J. Autry, Trae Barry, Daylon Brackett, Brock Burkhalter, Dalton Campbell, Dakota Chapman, Connor Christian, Shaq Davidson, Ryan Fagerstorm, Emmanuel Fennell, Eliah Goodman, Bryant Horn, Dean Kelly, Randy Robinson, Tyler Scozzaro, Landon Smith, Hunter Sosebee, Li'cedric Varner, Spencer Watley and Monty Young.
