Gamecocks Top Western Carolina to sweep Gamecock Classic

GADSDEN – The Jacksonville State volleyball team finished off a clean weekend on Saturday afternoon, winning a four-set match over Western Carolina to go undefeated through the Gamecock Classic hosted at the Beck Field House in Gadsden.

With the win, JSU (6-4) evened its record with the Catamounts who fell to 6-4 following the setback. Although this weekend's Classic was held off campus, the Gamecocks now stand at 6-1 during its two hosted tournaments.

Redshirt-freshman Addie Halverson hit .200 to as she pounded home home a match-high 19 kills setting the most by a Gamecock in a match this season. She was backed by Lena Kindermann (12) and Sadie Anderson (10) and Mackenzie Rombach with nine put-aways.

The explosive offense led sophomore setter Lexie Libs to dish out 51 assists for the second-consecutive match. The efficient offense which also saw Kaylee Frear add five kills, ties Libs with Jennifer Hart (2017) and Abbey Heredia (2013) for the third-most assists in a four-set match in JSU history. Brooke Schumacher holds the top two spots with 53 and 52 in separate matches during 2009.

The defense stood tall as well for Jax State after WCU evened the match at 1-1 by winning the second set 25-18. Senior Ashley Clingan collected 15 digs to lead the way for JSU, finishing one shy of her career record. Kaylie Milton upped 13 attacks, while a trio of Gamecocks including Halverson, Libs and Jade Humphrey finished with 12.

In a tied match, JSU rallied late in the third to come from behind and claim the final five points of the third to take a 2-1 advantage. In the fourth, the two squads battled back-and-forth early before JSU wore the Catamounts down for a 25-19 result to secure the final match of the weekend.

Following the action, Rombach, Clingan and Kindermann were named to the All-Tournament team, with Rombach earning MVP honors.

JSU will look to keep its tournament momentum rolling next weekend in Troy, Ala., as the Gamecocks face Kennesaw State, Florida A&M and host Troy, before entering Ohio Valley Conference play on September 21.
