JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team opened the 2019 season with a 4-3 win over West Alabama on Saturday at the JSU Tennis Courts.
Â
Despite dropping the doubles point, the Gamecocks dominated the first four matches of singles play to earn the victory over the Tigers.
Â
"I think this is a great start to our season," head coach
Andres Amores said. "West Alabama is a team with a lot of depth, and they are extremely competitive. I thought our team fought really hard today."
Â
Cristina Moll Alles won her first collegiate match in two sets, and Elena Tendro followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win. Freshman
Harriet Hamilton gave the Gamecocks their third point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Daryna Hukasian.
Â
Alessia Locati fell 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 to Sarah Manseri, but a nail-biting win at No. 4 for
Alba Conejero over Georgiana Salom (6-4, 7-5) proved to be the deciding point for the Gamecocks.
Â
Jacksonville State will enjoy a brief break before its next match, scheduled to take on Jackson State on Friday, Feb. 8 in Jackson, Miss.
