Women's tennis opens season with 4-3 win over West Alabama

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team opened the 2019 season with a 4-3 win over West Alabama on Saturday at the JSU Tennis Courts.

Despite dropping the doubles point, the Gamecocks dominated the first four matches of singles play to earn the victory over the Tigers.

"I think this is a great start to our season," head coach Andres Amores said. "West Alabama is a team with a lot of depth, and they are extremely competitive. I thought our team fought really hard today."

Cristina Moll Alles won her first collegiate match in two sets, and Elena Tendro followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win. Freshman Harriet Hamilton gave the Gamecocks their third point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Daryna Hukasian.

Alessia Locati fell 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 to Sarah Manseri, but a nail-biting win at No. 4 for Alba Conejero over Georgiana Salom (6-4, 7-5) proved to be the deciding point for the Gamecocks.

Jacksonville State will enjoy a brief break before its next match, scheduled to take on Jackson State on Friday, Feb. 8 in Jackson, Miss.
