
Gamecocks host Eastern Illinois Thursday at Pete Mathews Coliseum

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's basketball teams host Eastern Illinois at Pete Mathews Coliseum Thursday night in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader. The women's game begins at 5:15 p.m., followed by a 7:15 p.m. start for the men's game.
Thursday is SGA Spirit Night at The Pete. The JSU student group with the most members in attendance will win a $200 cash prize for their organization, and all students will receive free
pizza.
Special guest Red Panda, the world-famous acrobat as seen on 'America's Got Talent' and at numerous NBA halftimes, will perform at halftime of both games.
The JSU women and Eastern Illinois enter Thursday with identical 7-6 overall marks and 1-1 records in OVC action. After falling to preseason league favorite Belmont in the conference opener, JSU rebounded with a 62-52 win at Tennessee State last Saturday led by Taylor Hawks' 15 points.
Hawks was just one of three Gamecocks to reach double-figures at TSU, along with senior Rayven Pearson (11) and sophomore Jayla Walker with 10. Hawks and Pearson are averaging double-digits for the season at 12.1 and 10.3, respectively, while freshman Yamia Johnson has come on strong lately to increase her scoring average to 9.2. Defensively, JSU remains the top scoring defense in the conference allowing just 57.8 points per game. Meanwhile, the Panthers bring the second-best OVC scoring defense to Pete Mathews Coliseum on Thursday with opponents scoring just 59.8 against the EIU.
JSU once lost 11-straight to EIU, and trails the overall series, 13-8, but has won three of the last five under Rick Pietri, including a 2-0 home record. The Gamecocks overcame a halftime deficit to win on the road last season in Charleston, Ill., in the only meeting of the year. The two squads will meet again on February 28 in the final regular-season weekend up in Illinois, marking the first year the series has seen multiple meetings in the same year since 2010-1

The Gamecocks and Panthers both enter the contest with a 2-0 conference mark. JSU has the opportunity to start the season 3-0 in league play for the first time since the 2002-03 season. Thursday's game also marks the first time EIU has visited The Pete in three years, and the last time JSU claimed a win over the Panthers at The Pete was Jan. 26, 2012.
Jacksonville State has won three games in a row, earning its first road sweep of Belmont and Tennessee State in program history. JSU topped Belmont 83-73 on Jan. 3 and edged out Tennessee State 69-62 on Jan. 5. The Gamecocks are just the second OVC program to take down both the Bruins and Tigers on the road, becoming the first to do it since Eastern Kentucky in 2015-16.
Redshirt senior Detrick Mostella will make his Pete Mathews debut Thursday after missing six games with a leg injury. The guard returned to the court Jan. 3 at Belmont and played like he had not missed a beat, scoring an average of 17.0 points in the conference season's first two games. He totaled a season-best 19 against the Bruins and put up 15 at Tennessee State. He hit 10 of 15 shots taken, including six 3-pointers, and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Eastern Illinois goes into the game having won three in a row, as well, including OVC openers UT Martin and SIUE at Lantz Arena. The reigning conference newcomer of the week, Josiah Wallace, helped the Panthers to two wins last week with an a 25.5-points-per-game average. Wallace earned the title for a second time this season when he scored 27 points against the Skyhawks and 24 against Edwardsville.
