JACKSONVILLE – Heading into the midway mark of the Ohio Valley Conference season, the Jacksonville State volleyball team travels to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois looking to keep pace with the conference front-runners.
Â
JSU (11-7, 5-1 OVC) currently shares the OVC lead with Morehead State, who the Gamecocks handed their only league loss to earlier this season. Just behind the Eagles and Gamecocks is a logjam of 4-2 clubs, including Friday's competition, SIUE. The Cougars join Southeast Missouri, Murray State and Tennessee Tech in a four-way tie for third.
Â
Off to its best conference start in four years, JSU will look to shake recent woes against the Illinois members of the OVC.
Â
Since joining the OVC in 2011, SIUE has been a thorn in the side of the Gamecocks, winning seven of the first eight meetings, until Jax State swept both meetings last year, including their first round OVC tournament matchup. JSU will carry the hottest hitting team in the league up to the Vadalabene Center on Friday still trying for the Gamecocks' first road win in the series.
Â
The Gamecocks enter with the best hitting percentage in the league at .297, while SIUE boasts the third-best defensive average holding opponents to just .159 through six matches.
Â
On Saturday, JSU will head across state to EIU to meet the Panthers who have also had a hold on JSU of late, taking seven of the last nine matches since 2011. With Kaylee Frear (.325) and Sadie Anderson (.305) joining the OVC-leader Lena Kindermann in hitting percentage, JSU holds three of the top seven hitting positions in the conference.
Â
JSU's offense is directed by junior setter Lexie Libs, who once again enters weekend action as the reigning OVC setter of the week. Across the net, Libs is fourth on the team in digs behind freshman Erin Carmichael (235), junior Kaylie Milton and junior Dani Steele.
Â
Both road matches are set to stream on ESPN+ with live stats available at JSUGamecockSports.com.
