JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams had their first tune-up of the fall with the JSU Fall Invitational over the weekend. The Gamecocks hosted the two-day tournament Friday and Saturday at the JSU Tennis Courts in preparation for the upcoming 2020 schedule.

The University of Alabama at Huntsville, Point University and Auburn University at Montgomery took part in the four-team Jacksonville tournament, and head coach Andres Amores said he was encouraged by his teams' performances.

"Both the men and women had a great tournament," Amores said. "We played pretty well. Between the men and women, we won 15 of 22 matches on the first day. The second day, we won 18 of 25 matches.

Of the four teams, we won the most matches, so we were very happy with the result. Now we have to get ready for our home match against West Alabama on Wednesday."

The men's tennis team is coming off a championship 2019 season, earning a share of the Ohio Valley Conference title for the first time since 2014. The Gamecocks look to keep a streak alive of 10-or-more match victories in a single season and extend the run to 10 years in 2020. The men are led by seniors Guillermo Agost and Sergio Lizarraga. The two upperclassmen highlight a 12-man roster dotted with five newcomers that includes four freshmen.

The women's tennis squad is coming off a 2019 campaign that saw the Gamecocks win 14 matches. It was the most wins in a single season since earning 15 victories in 2013. The women's team is led by seniors Malin Buechner and Alba Conejero, and features the 2019 OVC Freshman of the Year in now-sophomore Harriet Hamilton.

The Gamecocks continue their fall schedules Wednesday, Oct. 9 when they host West Alabama at 2 p.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts.
