CAPE GIRADEAU, Mo. – The Jacksonville State women's volleyball team visits Southeast Missouri State on Saturday afternoon at the Houck Fieldhouse for an early November showdown at the top of the Ohio Valley Conference.
Â
The two teams enter Saturday's bout tied for first place in the OVC with identical 9-2 conference records. Morehead State could also reach that mark with a win on Friday night. JSU is 15-8 overall, having won eight of its last nine contests, while the Redhawks stand at 17-8 after five-straight victories.
Â
Almost a year ago, JSU swept SEMO in the 2018 regular-season finale in Jacksonville to secure the fourth seed in last year's tournament where the Gamecocks went on to grab their first postseason win in nine years. One year later, Jax State is chasing a regular-season title down the stretch with five matches remaining. JSU is 15-10 all-time against SEMO, and 6-5 in road matches.
Â
Junior Lexie Libs is closing in on 1,000 assists for the second-straight year for JSU and has ranked as one of the top setter in Division volleyball throughout the year. Her offense has been power by sophomore Lena Kindermann, senior Kaylee Frear and junior Kaylee Milton all season long. Kindermann enters with a team-best 309 kills, and own one of the best percentages in the OVC. Milton's provided 244 kills at just under three kills per set, and is just four digs shy of 200 as Fullerton, Calif., native is proved to be an all-around threat.
Â
Behind her 922 assists, Libs is just behind Milton with 188 digs. Both follow freshman libero Erin Carmichael's team-high 304 count for the first-year Gamecock from Avon, Indiana. Along with Carmichael, JSU has found success in all four of its freshmen with Taylor Pribyl, Kylee Quigley and Anna Nelson all playing unique roles.
Â
On the opposite end of the roster, seniors Shayla Schmidt and Maddie Cloutier have returned for major parts in JSU's 2019 stretch. Cloutier is having the best season of her career, topping almost all of her previous bests, while Schmidt returned a few weeks ago from an early-season injury to provide upperclassmen experience at the net. The Gamecocks stay fresh with upperclassmen on the court with consistent subs from Sadie Anderson (191 kills) and Dani Steele (168 digs).
Â
At the net defensively, Frear leads the Red and White with 72 blocks, ahead of Kindermann, Libs and Schmidt. A product of Colorado Springs, Colo., Frear may soon become the 21st Gamecock to reach 1,000 kills as she enters the SEMO match just six away for her career.
