BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State women's tennis freshman Harriet Hamilton was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week on Wednesday, as announced by the league office.
Â
The Turin, Italy native picks up the honor following her first collegiate weekend of play.
Â
"Harriet is a true freshman who has been playing at the top positions on the team since she arrived here in August," head coach Andres Amores said. "She is handling the pressures of being a team mate and playing at a very high level extremely well. I am very happy her and glad she was named player of the week."
Â
Hamilton was 3-0 in singles action last week, earning two wins at Jackson State and one at Alcorn State. Her first Division I matchup was a nail-biter that saw her take Jackson State's Lucia Solis to three sets on Feb. 7 in Jackson, Miss. The true freshman battled back from a 6-2, second-set loss to win 10-9 in the deciding set. She then downed the Tigers' Oni Jones in two sets and Alcorn's Anastasia Vaganova in two sets.
Â
In doubles play, she and partner Elena Tendero scored a 6-1 win over Jackson State's Solia and Lucia Placidi at No. 2 to help the Gamecocks to a point on Feb. 7.
Â
Overall, including JSU's season-opening win over West Alabama, Hamilton sports a 4-0 singles record and 1-1 doubles record.
Â
The JSU freshman is the first Gamecock to earn OVC weekly honors since alumna Genevie Ulanday earned the title on April 12, 2018.
Â
Jacksonville State is back in action Saturday, Feb. 16 against Alabama State in Montgomery, Ala. The Gamecocks' next home match is set for Wednesday, Feb. 20 at noon against North Alabama.
