JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team goes on the road for two games to defend its first-place standing in the Ohio Valley Conference beginning Thursday night with a visit to UT Martin.
Â
The Gamecocks (16-7, 8-2 OVC) and last-place Skyhawks (6-15, 1-9) square off at 7:30 p.m. at the Elam Center in Martin, Tenn., Thursday, followed by a Saturday contest at Southeast Missouri at 4:15 p.m. Both games are set to broadcast live on ESPN+, and Mike Parris will provide the play-by-play call on the Gamecocks Radio Network.
Â
Jacksonville State is currently in a four-way tie for first atop the OVC standings with Murray State, Belmont and Austin Peay. Belmont is on the road at EKU on Thursday, while Murray State hosts Eastern Illinois and SIUE is at Austin Peay.
Â
The Gamecocks are coming off a tough 74-71 loss to Austin Peay at home on Feb. 2. JSU is 2-2 in its last four OVC games, but are still on pace for the best season in the program's Division I history. Jacksonville State sits in first place in the league standings after 10 games of the conference schedule; a new JSU record. Prior to this season, the closest JSU came to first place after 10 games was second place with a 7-3 record to first-place Troy at 9-1 during the 1999-00 season in the TAAC. The Gamecocks are 8-2 in the OVC with eight games remaining in the regular season.
Â
Jacksonville State is enjoying one of its best seasons in its Division I history, and senior Jason Burnell has a lot to do with it. Along with his impressive overall numbers, the forward has averaged a team-best 17.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.8 baskets per game since the beginning of OVC play. In 10 games, Burnell also has 28 assists, eight blocks and 11 steals. During the Gamecocks' early five-game winning streak, the senior forward totaled a team-leading 82 points, along with six steals and six blocks. During the seven-game winning streak, he had a team-high 123 points, 68 rebounds and 24 assists. He fell just two assists shy of a triple-double Jan. 3 at Belmont with 19 points, 12 boards and eight helpers. He has scored double-digits in 19 of 23 games this season and ranks 21st in the NCAA with 10 double-doubles.
Â
UT Martin enters the game looking for its second OVC win of the season, but its 1-9 conference record is extremely misleading. The Skyhawks came up just one point shy of a win over Tennessee State last Thursday, 68-67, and dropped a two-point contest to EIU on Jan. 24, 66-64. They have two overtime losses to EIU and SEMO, respectively, and they came up just two points short of upsetting Austin Peay on Jan. 12.
Â
For the season, the Skyhawks have six averaging double-figures, led by Quintin Dove and Craig Randall who are each averaging 12.0 points per game. Dove has 253 total points in 21 games played, while Randall has scored 24 points in two games.
