JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team picked up its second Ohio Valley Conference match in a row Thursday with a 6-1 win over UT Martin at the JSU Tennis Courts.
 
The Gamecocks (11-3, 4-1 OVC) is hanging tight in the OVC standings, tied for second in the league with Belmont and Murray State with three matches left to play before the start of the OVC Championships in Nashville, Tenn.
 
JSU took two sets in doubles play to earn the day's first point. Alba Conejero and Malin Buechner shut out the Skyhawks' (3-11, 1-5 OVC) Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter 6-0 at No. 1, while Harriet Hamilton and Elena Tendero finished off Mizuki Sakurai and Daphne Pratt 6-3 at No. 2 for the win.
 
Tendero led the Gamecocks to their second point with a two-set win over Andrea Plantada at No. 5, and Buechner put JSU up by three with a quick two-set sweep of Pratt at No. 3.
 
Cristina Moll Alles locked up the win for JSU with a three-set thriller over Sakurai, winning 6-0 in the final set at No. 1.

 

Hamilton added another point in a second three-set match against Jumamukhambetova, winning 6-4 in the final set at No. 1.
 
Alessia Locati fell in two sets to Potter at No. 2, but Conejero finished strong for the Gamecocks with a three-set victory over Amelia Campbell at No. 4. Conejero won the first set 6-4 before losing the second set by the same score, but claimed the last stanza 6-2 over the Skyhawk sophomore.
 
Jacksonville State is back in action Saturday at 11 a.m. to take on Southeast Missouri at the JSU Tennis Courts. The team will honor senior Tendero as it is Senior Day for the women's tennis team. All fans in attendance will receive a 2019 team photo.
