JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State men's tennis junior Aljaz Kaplja is representing his home country of Slovenia in the Davis Cup, the World Cup of Tennis, this weekend in Cairo, Egypt.
Â
The 2019 edition of the Davis Cup features 133 nations competing for the title, making it the world's largest annual international team competition in the sport.
Â
Kaplja is one of just eight selected to compete for Slovenia's national team. The Slovenian team is ranked 56th in the world, and is a fairly new squad to Davis Cup competition. Prior to the 1993 season, Slovenia's players competed for Yugoslavia.
Â
"This is a fantastic opportunity for Aljaz," head coach Andres Amores said. "It is an honor to play for your home country in such a prestigious, and selective, event. We're proud to have him representing Jacksonville State on the world's stage. This opportunity is few-and-far between."
Â
In 2019, Kaplja was named to the Ohio Valley Conference First Team and posted eight singles victories at No. 1 as a sophomore. As a freshman in 2018, the Radomlje, Slovenia native earned another eight wins at No. 1 and was named the OVC's Freshman of the Year.
