BIRMINGHAM – Jacksonville State's track and field team visited the Magic City for the second-straight weekend to begin the 2020 indoor season at the Samford Invite.

Senior Baylee Porch kicked off the weekend at Thursday's pentathlon competition. The Albertville, Ala., native, tied two Murray State Racers for first in the high jump event with a height of 1.65 meters, and later placed third in the shot put to finish sixth overall in the multi-event challenge. Her final score of 3224 was just under 100 from her career mark from last year's OVC championships.

Also in the field events, sophomore Donna Dunkum led JSU in the high jump with a sixth-place spot clearing 1.50 meters, while newcomer Casey Phelan scored her second-straight top five finish in the pole vault to start the season at 3.65 meters. In the shot put, sophomore Adrian Rock's 11.59 meter throw was good for eighth and just over a meter ahead of freshman Kirsen Gardner's 13th finish.

On the track, junior Tylyn Register and sophomore Ashton Coats turned in identical 9.28-second marks in the 60 meter hurdles, just missing the finals by two-tenths of a second. Register also scored a top 20 time in the 400 meter race, along with Leandra Custodio.

In distance running, senior Emily Sorrell came home ninth in the 800 meters at 2:22.43, ahead of freshmen Elizabeth Wetmore in 16th and Libba Sheppard in 22nd.

JSU now prepares to head to next weekend's Thundering Herd Invite at Marshall University in Huntington, W.V.
