JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will open its home schedule in a big way this weekend, when they host the Jacksonville State Invite at University Field.
The Gamecocks (6-7) will play four games over the two-day tournament, which will also feature in-state rival Samford and first-time opponent UT San Antonio. Each day will feature three games, with Samford and UTSA playing before Jax State faces both teams.
Play will begin on Friday at 12 pm with the first meeting between the Bulldogs and Roadrunners. JSU will face Samford at 2:30 pm and then UTSA at 5 pm. On Saturday, the day starts at 10 a.m., with JSU hosting UTSA at 12:30 pm and Samford at 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.JSUGamecockSports.com/Tickets, and admission is free for JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under.
The Gamecocks will play in their home stadium for the first time this season and look to use that home field advantage to get back above .500 on the season. They were 18-3 at home a year ago, when they claimed the OVC Regular Season Championship.
2020 has seen several new faces jump into the mix early on. Through the first 13 games of the season, JSU has relied on youth to lead the way. Four players are hitting over .300 so far - three sophomores and a junior college transfer in Keeli Bobbitt, who leads the team with a .438 average.
Sophomore Karsen Mosley is second on the team with a .356 average to go along with two home runs and 14 RBI. Sophomore and Georgia State transfer Maddie Clay is batting .353, while sophomore Savannah Sudduth is batting .325 in the leadoff spot.
The Bulldogs (7-8) snapped a three-game losing streak on Sunday with a 6-5 win over Georgia Tech in Birmingham. They are led by Whitney Hinton and O'Neil Robinson, who are batting .377 and .354, respectively with a combined seven home runs.
The Roadrunners (11-5) have won seven of their last eight games, including three out of four at last week's tournament in Arlington, Texas. Five players are batting over .300 for UTSA, who has hit a combined 19 home runs so far this season. Taylor Medina and Madison Washington have combined for nine of those with five and four, respectively.
