BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – After leading the Jacksonville State baseball team to a series win over in-state foe South Alabama over the weekend, senior
Alex Webb was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.
Webb finished the four-game week hitting .529 (9-of-17) and delivered eight RBI for the week. His home run against Alabama in his final at bat sparked his stellar weekend against the Jaguars. In the series, he collected eight of the nine hits, including a four-hit contest in the series finale on Sunday. Webb posted a pair of doubles in the series. The Columbia, Tennessee catcher had two hits and four RBI in the opening game of the weekend and added two more hits and an RBI in Saturday's 8-2 series-clinching win. Webb had an on-base percentage of .556 and a slugging mark of .824.
He raised his season average to .339 and has a team-best 20 hits on the season. Webb leads the club in RBI with 15 and has been solid defensively by throwing four baserunners out on steal attempts.
The Gamecocks will be idle during the midweek as they shift their focus to the Ohio Valley Conference schedule this weekend with a visit to Murray, Kentucky. The serieswith Murray State will start on Friday, March 19 at 3 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader that starts at 12 p.m. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
