JACKSONVILLE – After eight games away from Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium, the Gamecocks will open their Ohio Valley Conference home schedule against Tennessee Tech.
JSU and TTU will open the weekend set on Friday with a 6 p.m. contest, followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
Jax State enters the contest looking to get back on track overall and shake off a tough OVC opening weekend at Murray State last weekend. JSU dropped its midweek outing on Wednesday at Kennesaw State. The Golden Eagles enter the weekend having won their last three outings and claimed the first two OVC series (2-1 - Austin Peay; 2-1 - Eastern Illinois).
The Golden Eagles will be making their second trip to Jacksonville in the 2021 season as they were one of the four teams that participated in a round-robin event hosted by JSU on the opening weekend of the season. JSU dropped a 4-3 non-conference decision to Tech on Sunday, Feb. 21.
Jax state owns a 28-22 lead in the all-time series. The Gamecocks have won 12-of-the-last-16 series against TTU, including a sweep of the 2019 series between the two clubs on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
The Gamecocks rank among the OVC leaders in all three categories – hitting, pitching and fielding. Heading into the weekend action, JSU ranks third in overall batting average with a team mark of .271. Jax State slipped to fourth in overall pitching with a 5.03 earned run average. Defensively, the Gamecocks are listed second in the conference with a fielding percentage of .975.
JSU's rotation will revert to the first four weekends of the season with the pitching rotation with junior Christian Edwards taking the mound in Friday's opener. Redshirt junior Dylan Hathcock will pitch the second game, while junior Colin Casey will make a start in the series finale. Edwards has been sensational on the bump in his last outings, he is tossed 18.2 innings of work, allowed three hits and two earned runs. During that span, the Hartselle, Alabama righthander has struck out 29 batters and an earned run average of 0.96. Opposing hitters are hitting .050 in the last three starts for him.
Offensively, JSU is led by redshirt sophomore Nash Adams and senior Alex Webb. The two have combined for 32 RBI on the season and 47 total hits between the Adams and Webb. Adams, from Helena, Alabama has the best average on the team at .382, while Webb has a mark of .333 at the plate.
