JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will continue its homestand this weekend, when the Gamecocks host Murray State in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at University Field.
Â
The Gamecocks will bring a three-game win streak into the series, which will start with a 1 p.m. CT doubleheader on Friday. The two teams will wrap up the weekend with a 1 p.m. single game on Saturday. All three games will be televised on ESPN+.
Â
JSU (8-16, 7-7 OVC) is coming off a doubleheader sweep of Tennessee Tech on Tuesday that saw Reagan Watkins and Nicole Rodriguez combine to not allow an earned run over the 14 innings played. JSU won the opener, 5-1, before claiming a 2-0 victory in the second game.
Â
The Racers (14-16, 11-3 OVC) had won six in a row before dropping one of their three games with Tennessee State last week. They have lost two of their last three after falling to Middle Tennessee in 10 innings on Tuesday.Â
Â
The Gamecocks are led by senior outfielder Jada Terry, who's .356 average, five home runs and 19 RBI are all tops on the team. Junior Karsen Mosley is hitting .338 and went 3-for-6 with a double and four RBI in Tuesday's sweep of Tennessee Tech.
Â
Rodriguez and Watkins lead the JSU pitching staff. Rodrigues is 4-3 with a 2.32 earned run average, while Watkins has a 3.33 ERA and a 2-4 record in the circle.
Â
The Racers have been led by Jensen Striegel (.278 average) and Sierra Gilmore (.270, three home runs and 21 RBI) at the plate, while everyone on their pitching staff holds an ERA under 2.35. Taylor Makowsky is 4-1 with a 1.58 ERA, and Hannah James is 5-6 with a 1.99 ERA.Â
Â
The series could have big conference implications for JSU, who enter the weekend in eighth place and trying to climb into the top four. MSU is currently second and only one game out of first place. The OVC will only take four teams to its conference tournament in Oxford, Ala., on May 13-15.
