Men's tennis earns Saturday sweep of Tennessee State

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team walloped Tennessee State 7-0 Saturday at the JSU Tennis Courts to open the final homestand of the season.

The Gamecocks (9-6, 3-1 OVC) took the doubles point, five doubles points by competition and claimed the seventh point by default as the Tigers (0-12, 0-4 OVC) finished the season without a win.

Joaquin Vallejo and Maj Tomac pushed their team-best doubles record to 12-2 with their 6-2 victory at No. 3 over Maksims Kazijevs and Diego Britt-Alvarez, and Guillermo Agost and Jordi Blanchar finished off TSU in doubles play with a 6-2 win at No. 2.

Jax State went up 2-0 automatically by winning the sixth matchup by default. Vallejo made it a 3-0 match with his 6-3, 6-1 win in straight sets at No. 1 over Kazijevs, and Thomas Norwood followed up with a two-set win over Stefan Koruga.

The Tigers tried to climb back into the match at No. 5, but Andrea Moro outlasted Leandros Misdrachis in the three-set nail-biter. After Moro took the first set 6-1, Misdrachis battled back to claim a 6-3 win in the second frame. It would stand as the only set victory for TSU on the afternoon as Moro rallied back to take a 10-4 win in the deciding set.

Blanchar and Aljaz Kaplja finished off the Tigers with a pair of sweeps at No. 4 and No. 3, respectively.

Jacksonville State wraps up the regular season Sunday with a 10 a.m. matchup with Belmont. Senior Day ceremonies for both the men's and women's tennis squads are set to take place at approximately 1 p.m.

The Ohio Valley Conference Championships, hosted by Evansville, Indiana, are scheduled to begin Saturday, April 24.
