JACKSONVILLE – Senior
Guillermo Agost led the Jacksonville State men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over Belmont on Senior Day on Sunday, securing the No. 2 seed for the Gamecocks in the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Tennis Championships.
Â
Agost was honored before the match as the team's lone departing senior.
Â
Jax State (10-6, 4-1 OVC) handed the Bruins (11-4, 3-2 OVC) just their second conference loss of the season, rallying back for four singles wins after dropping the doubles point.
Â
Thomas Norwood and
Aljaz Kaplja earned a 6-3 doubles win, but Belmont took the other two sets to take a 1-0 advantage into singles play.
Â
Norwood took two sets from Tomas Luis at No. 3 to tie the match, and
Aljaz Kaplja followed up with a 7-5, 6-1 sweep of Taisei Miyamoto to give JSU a 2-1 lead.
Joaquin Vallejo's three-set win at No. 1 over Marko Illic (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) put the Gamecocks on decision away from match point.
Â
Despite Jax State falling at No. 6, Agost used a three-set victory at No. 4 to claim the win for the home team in the final match of the regular season. Diego Castro took the first set 7-6, but Agost answered with a bit 7-6 win in the second set and finished off the Bruin with a 6-3 win in the third.
Â
The OVC Championships are set for April 24-25 at the Wesselman Tennis Center in Evansville, Indiana. The No. 2 Gamecocks will take on No. 3 Belmont at 10 a.m. on Saturday. With a win, JSU will square off against the winner of No. 1 Tennessee Tech and No. 4 Austin Peay. The championship round is scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m.
