CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Jacksonville State Gamecocks defeated Charleston Southern 3-1 in comeback fashion on the road in the final match of the Charleston Southern Tournament. Senior
Lena Kindermann recorded her 1,000
th career kill early in the match, totaling a season-high 18.
CSU (1-4) took the first set from the Gamecocks 25-23. JSU responded winning three straight sets 26-24, 25-15, and 25-19 for the match win.
The beginning of the second set was back-and-forth between both sides until a kill from Halverson jump started a short Gamecock run. Junior
Sadie Brown capped a 3-0 run for JSU, to lead 14-11. The Bucs responded with a 6-0 run of their own to lead, 17-14. Senior
Addie Halverson put the squad ahead 19-18 before Kidnermann extended the lead to 22-19 with her 11th kill of the match. CSU would not go away quietly in the second set, tying it up 24-24.
Lexie Libs recorded a kill and an ensuing block for Libs and
Zoe Gonzales sealed the set win, 26-24.
In the third set, JSU took control early, leading 9-4, following a service ace from Junior
Erin Carmichael and a Kindermann kill. CSU cut the lead to two but a kill from
Addie Halverson extended the lead to seven, 18-11. JSU outscored the Bucs the rest of the way, winning the third set 25-15.
The Gamecocks led by five early in the fourth set, 8-3, after a CSU attack error. The Bucs took a 15-14 lead midway through the set, before a kill by senior
Kaylie Milton put JSU ahead 16-15. The Gamecocks would lead the set the rest of the way.
Kylee Quigley's service ace gave JSU set point and a block from Gonzales and Kindermann secured the match win, 25-19.
Along with Kindermann, three Gamecocks recorded double-digit kills. \ Milton totaled 12 while senior Halverson set a season-high with 11. In addition to 12 kills, Milton also totaled 10 digs for her second double-double of the season. Carmichael led the Gamecocks with 11 digs and also had two service aces.
"I thought Lena carried us offensively at times tonight," said Head Coach
Todd Garvey. "As her coach it is awesome to see her transformation as a player but even more so as a person these past three and a half years. She has taken her game to a whole new level & I love the confidence she now has in herself both on and off the court. She has put in the work and it's great to see her reach the 1,000 kills mark"
