JSU Sweeps Jacksonville in ASUN Triumph

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – Gamecock volleyball (19-4, 7-3) swept Jacksonville (8-14, 2-8) in straight sets in Saturday evening's ASUN Conference match at Swisher Gymnasium. Jacksonville State was able to take out some frustration on the Dolphins after Friday's narrow loss to North Florida.

"I'm very proud of this team for how we bounced back from last night," Jacksonville State head coach Todd Garvey said after the win. "It says a lot about the character of our team to have that type of resiliency. I was proud of our fight, focus, and the team-first attitude that this team continues to have."

That dominant triumph saw the offense and defense shine for Jacksonville State. JSU hit .418 in the match, their fourth-best attack percentage of the season and the sixth-best such mark of any ASUN team in 2022. Jax State recorded seven aces and had 51 total kills in the win.

"I thought we were clicking on all cylinders offensively tonight," Garvey said. "Lena (Kindermann) and Sophie (Riemersma) had unbelievable nights and we were really balanced. I thought our offense and our serving put press on JU the whole night."

A smothering defensive attack held JU to a hitting percentage of just .152. The Gamecocks out-blocked the Dolphins 6-4 and had 45 digs to Jacksonville's 34.

"Our middles did a great job of blocking and our back-row defense was great," Garvey said. "We won a lot of hustle plays which I love to see as well."

Jacksonville State wasted little time pulling away from the Dolphins in the first set. Midway through the opening frame, an 11-2 scoring run propelled the Gamecocks out in front. Garvey's squad kept its foot on the pedal in a 25-12 victory.

The second set was very similar. This time around, it was a pair of 5-0 runs that carried JSU to another set win. Three consecutive blocks in the middle of the interval gave Jacksonville State a 13-7 advantage, and consecutive kills by graduate transfer Sophie Riemersma secured the 25-13 decision.

Jacksonville showed some great resolve in the third frame. Although Jax State raced out to 20-11 lead, the Dolphins rallied to cut the deficit to one. It was not enough, though, as a Courtney Glotzbach kill secured the 25-23 set win and the three-set triumph.

Fifth-year outside hitter Lena Kindermann had eight kills in the opening set and finished with 14 kills on 19 swings, good enough for a .737 hitting percentage. Riemersma added 13 kills on a .522 clip. Redshirt sophomore Courtney Glotzbach finished with nine kills and a career-high four aces in the win. Meanwhile, middle blockers Zoe Gonzales and Katie Montgomery ended up with seven kills each and combined for four blocks. Additionally, Claire Ochs followed up last night's season-high with a 42-assist effort at Swisher Gymnasium.

Erin Carmichael had a team-high 11 digs and Ochs finished with nine. Sophomore Brooklyn Schiffli had another nice outing with eight digs coming off the bench.

Jacksonville State returns to action next weekend at home. In their final full weekend at The Pete, JSU will host FGCU in a 2021 ASUN Championship Final rematch on Friday night before taking on Stetson on Saturday afternoon. Admission to both matches at Pete Mathews Coliseum will be free, but ESPN+ broadcasts will be provided for those unable to attend.
