JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State men's tennis will resume their Fall 2022 slate this weekend with an appearance at the Grizzly Open. The event, which is hosted by NAIA dynasty Georgia Gwinnett College, will be held Friday through Sunday in Lawrenceville, Ga.
JSU's men have had consecutive strong showings to open their 2022-23 schedule. The Gamecocks made quick work of North Alabama in mid-September's Gamecock Hidden Duals, then crushed another ASUN foe last Friday when Kennesaw State came to town for an exhibition. Now, Jax State will venture away from the JSU Tennis Courts for the first time this Fall for a tough weekend invite.
The Grizzly Open will feature a tournament format with multiple singles draws and one large doubles draws. Jacksonville State will be sending ten men to compete in the invitational in metro Atlanta.
Fellow Division I program Alabama State will make the trip from Montgomery to take part in the Grizzly Open. Other opponents include Emory, North Georgia, and the host, Georgia Gwinnett.
This weekend's event presents another great opportunity for the Gamecocks to hone their skills this Fall. Alabama State is coming off a 12-win campaign last year in which they took home the SWAC Title and participated in the NCAA Regionals. Emory won the Division III National Championship a season ago and North Georgia made it all the way to the Division II Round of 32.
Georgia Gwinnett, on the other hand, has one of the best resumes of any program in the country. The Grizzlies have won 168 consecutive men's tennis matches and have taken home the last eight NAIA National Championships.
Jacksonville State has had a phenomenal start to the season. The returning competitors, such as junior Vanja Dobrnjac and sophomore Vicente Arbelaez, have had impressive outings so far and led a promising freshman class to two exhibition victories. Head coach Mike Mucci's squad will look to continue their great start at the GGC Tennis Facility this weekend.
The Grizzly Open will be JSU's final tune-up before next week's ITA Southern Regionals. That event will take place Oct. 13-18 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
