Riemersma Shines, Garvey Tops 100 Wins in Lipscomb Sweep

NASHVILLE, TENN. – Graduate transfer Sophie Riemersma had 13 kills and hit .500 on Friday night to lead Jacksonville State to a sweep of Lipscomb on the road. That quick yet competitive victory in the Volunteer State clinched a spot in the ASUN Conference Tournament for the Gamecocks and also served as the 100thcareer triumph for JSU head coach Todd Garvey.

"That's a big road win for us tonight against a good Lipscomb team," Garvey said after the thrilling win. "I thought we were really good offensively tonight. We were balanced and Sophie had a huge game. We served and serve-received really well tonight and got big stops defensively when we needed them.

"I didn't even know about the 100 wins to be honest," Garvey said. "But that is a team milestone more than anything. We have had a lot of great players in this program who have worked really hard day-in and day-out and built an awesome culture, so I'm really proud of all of them. (Assistant Coach Mackenzie Rombach) has been a huge help these past two years as well and it's great having her back here at JSU."

The two strong ASUN foes played to a back-and-forth opening set. Lipscomb raced out to an 8-4 advantage before Jax State rebounded with a 7-3 run to take their first lead of the match. The Gamecocks kept their foot on the pedal offensively and benefited from six service errors by the Bisons. Redshirt sophomore Courtney Glotzbach capped the opener with a kill, her fifth of the first set, in a 25-22 triumph.

Jax State impressed both offensively and defensively in the second. The Gamecocks hit a red-hot .542 as a team and held Lipscomb's dangerous offense to a hitting percentage of just .194. An 8-2 spurt early gave JSU an early lead, and although the Bisons kept it close throughout, they could not close the gap in a 25-19 win for the visitors.

The third set was an absolute marathon. JSU battled back from a bit of a slow start and controlled a two-point lead late in the interval. The Gamecocks had a match point at 24-23 before LU rallied to stay alive. That tit-for-tat nature continued for the next seven points as the two sides traded points. Finally, however, a Lipscomb service error followed by a Riemersma kill solidified the three-set win in the Music City.

Riemersma's 13 kills were tied for a match-high, and her .500 hitting percentage was the highest of anyone with more than six kills. Glotzbach added nine kills on a .381 clip to go along with her three blocks and two digs, and fifth-year Lena Kindermann finished with eight kills. Senior Zoe Gonzales and fifth-year Katie Montgomery had three blocks each and ended up with six and three kills respectively. Graduate setter Claire Ochs guided the offense well, tallying 35 assists, five digs, and three kills.

Senior Erin Carmichael reached 1400 career digs with a 12-dig, six-assist, two ace outing. Sophomore Brooklyn Schiffli added 11 digs as well.

JSU out-hit the Bisons .374 to .311. Both sides had six blocks, but the noticeable difference was in serving. Jax State had four aces and eight service errors, but Lipscomb had an astronomical 16 service errors and five aces.

Jacksonville State finishes this weekend's road trip with a Saturday afternoon showdown at Austin Peay. Tomorrow's important ASUN contest in Clarksville, Tenn., will have a first serve at 4 p.m. It will be broadcast on ESPN+. Score updates will be posted on JSU Volleyball's Twitter account (@JSUGamecockVB), and live stats and post-game coverage will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.

"Austin Peay is going to be another very tough test tomorrow," Garvey said. "They are a really good team who present some challenges, we are looking forward to the test."
