CLARKSVILLE, TENN. –
Sophie Riemersma reached an impressive milestone on Saturday evening, topping 1,000 career kills in Jacksonville State's straight-sets victory at Austin Peay. That win marked the 15
th sweep for the Gamecocks this season and their third in a row.
"I thought we played another really good match in all areas today against a very good Austin Peay team," JSU head coach
Todd Garvey said after the victory. "Our offense was very good again. I love how balanced we were and how we stepped up in pressure situations time and time again.
"Our serve and serve receive has been really good the past few weeks and we are playing at a high level which is fun to watch," Garvey said.
The Gamecocks dominated the opening set early on. Two service aces by sophomore
Brooklyn Schiffli played a big part in a 10-2 start, and Jax State's lead was as many as nine at 20-11 before Austin Peay responded. A 6-0 run from the Governors made things interesting, but it was not enough as JSU claimed a 25-17 set victory.
Saturday afternoon's second set was unbelievably close. Both sides refused to give in, leading to nine set points in the interval. The Gamecocks out-hit the Governors .368 to .302 in the frame and won thanks to an attack error and a
Sophie Riemersma kill, 33-31.
Although competitive, the third set was all JSU. After an early 4-3 advantage for Austin Peay, Jax State rebounded to take the lead and never trailed the rest of the way. A 6-1 midway through pushed it to a seven-point lead and, despite a valiant effort to continue the match by a scrappy APSU team, JSU pulled away late for a 25-22 set win.
Riemersma's 12-kill performance (.435 hitting percentage) pushed her over the millennium mark in her time as a Gamecock and Miami (Ohio) Redhawk. The Holland, Mich., native posted 761 kills in 97 matches at Miami and has now earned 240 this season in Jacksonville for a career total of 1,001.
Fifth-year outside hitter
Lena Kindermann finished with a match-high 16 kills on a .481 clip and added five digs, and
Katie Montgomery had 12 kills, two aces, two blocks, and hit .455 at Austin Peay. Redshirt sophomore
Courtney Glotzbach ended up with eight kills, three digs, two blocks, and one ace, and senior
Zoe Gonzales had six kills and a solo block. In addition,
Claire Ochs' 46 assists were one away from tying a conference season-high in three sets.
Senior libero
Erin Carmichael had 15 digs in the win. Senior
Kylee Quigley and sophomore
Brooklyn Schiffli tallied eight and six respectively at Winfield Dunn Center.
