Box Score JACKSON – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team defeated Jackson State, 5-2, to improve to 2-1 on the season on Monday afternoon.
To begin the match, JSU opened with a 1-0 lead in doubles following a forfeit in the No. 3 flight. The pair of
Thomas Norwood and
Alex Vishnevskiy clinched the doubles win for the Gamecocks in the No. 2 flight 6-4.
Due to only having five players, Jackson State forfeited the No. 6 singles flight which gave JSU a 2-0 advantage. Freshman
Logan Haga was credited with the win.
Vicente Arbelaez earned a 6-2, 6-2, win on the No. 2 court to give JSU a 3-1 advantage. Jackson State defeated the Gamecocks in the No. 5 flight, but
Joaquin Vallejo clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3, win on the No. 1 court. In addition,
Jordi Blanchar added a win with a 6-4, 7-6 victory in the No. 4 spot.
"We were down a few guys with injuries and general soreness from the long three-day trip, but the guys battled and won a tough double point and found enough to get over the hump against a Jackson state team that battles very hard," said Head Coach
Mike Mucci. "It was a tough weekend but I'm glad we ended on a positive note."
JSU will play its first home match of the season on Saturday, Feb.12 against Wallace State at the JSU Tennis Courts at 1 p.m.
