Lions Rally Past Gamecocks

JACKSONVILLE – Southeastern Louisiana rallied for five runs in the seventh to claim an 8-5 decision over Jacksonville State on Thursday in college softball action at University Field.

The Gamecocks (15-9) held a two-run lead going into the final inning of the contest, but a two-run home run off the bat of Lexi Johnson tied the game and a two-run RBI single from Audrey Greely gave the Lions the lead. SELA retired the Gamecocks in order to secure the win and moved its overall mark to 15-8.

Jax State, who will now turn its attention to ASUN action this weekend at Kennesaw State, broke open a 1-1 contest with a four-run third inning that was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by JSU. Junior Megan Fortner blasted a two-run home run down the left field line to give JSU the lead, followed by senior Karson Mosley's solo blast over the centerfield fence. It was Fortner's fourth home run of the season and Mosley's third of the year. Fortner, who finished with three RBI on the day, was joined by Lindsey Richardson and Brantly Bonds with multiple hits in the loss.

Sarah Currie tossed the first five innings for the Gamecocks and scattered six Lion hits and tallied a pair of strikeouts. Kat Carter, who suffered the loss in relief, tossed the last two innings.

Jax State chased SELA's starter after 2.2 innings with six hits and four runs across the plate. The Lions' relief work limited JSU to a pair of hits over the final 4.1 innings.

JSU's weekend against the Owls is set to start on Saturday, March 19 at 12 p.m. CST. The Gamecocks and KSU will play a Saturday doubleheader before wrapping up the series on Sunday at 11 a.m. CST. All three games will be available on YouTube Live.
