JACKSONVILLE - After going 11-5 in the month of March, Jacksonville State begins the month of April with a key ASUN West Division weekend series against Eastern Kentucky.
The series begins on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a Saturday night contest starting at 6 p.m. before the series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSPorts.com. JSU students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
The Gamecocks (12-11), who have won 8-of-the-last-9 games, have started league play with back-to-back sweeps of Lipscomb and North Alabama. Jax State enters the weekend after knocking off Southeastern Conference foe Auburn on Tuesday in the Tigers' home park. The Colonels of EKU march into Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium with an 18-8 overall mark and 5-1 in the ASUN. EKU begins the weekend riding a five-game winning streak after a sweep of Bellarmine last weekend and a Tuesday win over Kentucky in Lexington.
Sunday's series finale will have a Truist Park in Atlanta flavor. The reigning World Series Champion Atlanta Braves' mascot Blooper will be in attendance along with the organization's organist, Matthew Kaminski. Blooper will be available for pictures and other activities throughout the contest. The game and Bloopers' appearance is sponsored by the City of Anniston and Main Street Anniston.
The Braves welcomed their mascot to the club in 2018. Blooper succeeded the Braves' "Homer of the Brave" mascot after he went into retirement. According to MLB, Blooper is big, fuzzy, funny, and mischievous. He's also a "product of science run amok", meaning Blooper is everything that makes a Braves' superfan that came out of a machine -- a science experiment of sorts. He's nearly seven-foot tall and wears a 5XL T-shirt. He's a little strange but he's full of Braves spirit!
Kaminski, is a musician who performs for a crowd of 40,000 people at least 81 times a year at Truist Park in Atlanta. He is a versatile musician who's proficient on the piano and accordion as well as the Hammond B3 organ. He's been playing for the Braves since the 2009 season. A popular figure in the baseball world, he's known for entertaining the crowds with funny musical asides when a player from the opposing team is announced. NBC Sports online once wrote that "The Braves Organist is the Coolest Guy in the World."
The two clubs have met 44 previous times with JSU holding a 29-15 advantage while the two teams were members of the Ohio Valley Conference. JSU has won 13-of-the-17 series against EKU. Last season, the Colonels claimed the first two games of the series, 1-0 and 9-5 before JSU salvaged the final game with an 11-1 decision in 11 innings.
Junior outfielder T.J. Reeves continues to be an offensive producer for the Gamecocks. Through 23 games this season, the Birmingham, Ala. native is hitting a team-best .366 with 30 hits, including five doubles and four home runs. He enters the weekend having reached base in 22-of-the-23 games this season, including a current 12-game streak of reaching base. He has hits in 19-of-23 games and has multiple hits in seven games and has recorded multi-RBI games twice this season.
