Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With a 5-2 win over Lipscomb University on the road, the Jacksonville State men's tennis team advances to the ASUN Conference Championship tournament.
The Gamecocks secured the final spot in the tournament field with Saturday's win and finish 3-5 in ASUN competition this season.
JSU got off to a hot start, winning the doubles point.
Thomas Norwood and
Maj Tomac opened the match with a 6-2 win in the first doubles flight before
Jordi Blanchar and
Vanja Dobrnjac clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory in the second flight.
Joaquin Vallejo and
Alex Vishnevskiy's third-flight match went unfinished with the pair in front 5-2.
Following the doubles point, JSU battled the Bison's in singles play. Dobrnjac quickly put the Gamecocks ahead 2-0 following a 6-2, 6-1, win on the No. 5 court.
Vicente Arbelaez pushed JSU to its third point of the match, winning 6-4, 6-4, in the fourth spot. Lipscomb halted JSU's momentum with a win in the third flight. Vallejo responded for the Gamecocks with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 win in the first flight to clinch the match and send the squad to the ASUN Conference Championship Tournament. Blanchar added the fifth and final point, 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 in the sixth flight.
"I'm so happy for the guys to pull through today and clinch a spot in the ASUN tournament in our first year in the conference," said Head Coach
Mike Mucci. "This is such a tough league and Lipscomb brought it today and made us earn it on their senior day. This means a lot to me and the whole team to do this for our seniors. We will rest and get ready to head down to Florida!"
No. 6 seeded JSU will face the No. 3 seeded Liberty Flames on Friday, April 22, at 4 p.m. CT in the ASUN Conference Championships in Fort Myers, Fla.
JSU's upcoming match against UAB on Sunday April 17, has been cancelded due to the weather forecast.
