FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jacksonville State prepares for its first-ever road game at Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday night in the first of two Sunshine State road contests this weekend.
Â
Jax State (8-11, 1-5 ASUN) is looking turn the tides with the first third of the conference season in the books. The Gamecocks face FGCU (13-6, 3-3 ASUN) at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT on Thursday in the only meeting between the two squads this season. The Gamecocks won the first and only prior meeting, 79-71, in Jacksonville last season.
Â
The Eagles are yet to lose on their home court this season (6-0) and the team's streak of 12-straight going back to last year ties the program's all-time record from 2013-14. In an attempt to collect a much-needed win which would double as a de facto tiebreaker should JSU and FGCU end next month even in the standings, Jax State will look to pull off its first road win since December 3.
Â
Senior Demaree King, JSU's leading scorer at 14.2 points per game, led the way in last season's meeting with a game-high 20 points. While he remains a key focus for opponents, fellow senior Skyelar Potter has been JSU's top scorers through its six league games to this point. The Gamecocks have worked at spreading the offense around as 10 Gamecocks have scored in double figures at least once this season, including sophomore Marcellus Brigham Jr., who went for a career-high 21 one week ago in the win over North Florida.
Â
FGCU averages 71.4 points as a team, a mark similar to what JSU has allowed its opponents this season. JSU's best success has come when it was able to counter an opponent's hot-shooting with an efficient offense of its own. Heading into its 20th game of the year, JSU is 7-1 when reaching 70 points offensively and just 1-10 when falling shy of that mark.
Â
Thursday's game streams on ESPN+ with live stats available at JSUGamecockSports.com. JSU Hall of Famer Mike Parris will provide the radio call across the Gamecock Sports Network.
Â
JSU faces Stetson on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET to wrap up the road trip.
